India adds nearly 7 GW of solar open-access capacity in 2024

Thanks to cheaper Chinese modules.

India has added 6.9 gigawatts (GW) of solar open access capacity in 2024, surging 77% from the installations recorded in 2023.

According to Mercom’s latest India Solar Open Access Market Report, the country’s cumulative installed solar capacity in the segment stood at 20.2 GW as of December 2024.

In the fourth quarter alone, India added the second-highest quarterly capacity with 2.1 GW, up 92% from the previous three months and a surge from the previous year’s 852.7 megawatts.

Mercom said the growth was fuelled by the availability of low-cost Chinese modules imported before the reimposition of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers order and for the exempted projects after the order reimposition.

Maharashtra led the installations per state, accounting for 18%, followed by Rajasthan with 15%, and Karnataka with 14%.
