EXEO's technologies target RE development in disaster-prone areas

The companies' technologies include horizontal directional drilling and drones.

EXEO delivers technologies that will help in addressing environmental, deployment, and maintenance challenges in renewable energy particularly those installed in areas with unique geological features such as Japan.

For example, the company offers horizontal directional drilling (HDD) which looks into terrains where it is safe to install cables for electrical transmission such as the seafloor, noting that natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons could easily damage those around the sea surface.

"Japan is very prone to earthquakes, typhoons and other natural disasters, and we have shifted our focus from installing these telecommunication cables to underground where they're safer and more stable," Nur Ellisha Binti Mokhtar, Supervisor, Civil Engineering Section at EXEO told Asian Power.

"Whatever happens on the sea surface won't affect the cables underneath," she said.

Mokhtar added that HDD is also used to address environmental concerns such as bypassing marine ecosystems and seaweed areas.

EXEO has also developed a Jointer Programme in partnership with SWCC to provide an intensive training course within six months. Through the programme, they aim to improve the shortage of skilled jointers who connect high voltage cables from a renewable energy source up to the commercial grids.

The company also developed a drone which can be used for turbine maintenance. EXEO used a drone before to manage large-area factory inventory to monitor large-scale projects.

"This can easily be applied to monitoring wind turbines, from shore and checking and marking which turbines need to be maintained, repaired and so forth," Mokhtar said.
