PT Indo Raya Tenaga wins big at the Asian Power Awards 2021

It bagged the Environmental Upgrade of the Year - Indonesia and the Coal Power Project of the Year - Silver awards.

Power generation company PT Indo Raya Tenaga has clinched two major awards—the Environmental Upgrade of the Year - Indonesia and the Coal Power Project of the Year - Silver—at the Asian Power Awards 2021 for its trailblazing project Jawa 9 & 10.

Jawa 9 & 10 is a 2,000-megawatt (MW) ultra-super critical coal-fired steam power plant located in Cilegon City, Banten Province in Indonesia. The groundbreaking project, which is currently in construction, is expected to be one of the most innovative and efficient coal-fired power plants employing the most advanced environmental protection equipment when in operation.

It is also said to perform even better than the national and international emissions standards set for gas-fired power plants.

In addition to the deployment of the latest generation ultra-super critical boiler technology and leading-edge environmental protection equipment like Low-NOx burners and FGD, Jawa 9 & 10 will be the first power plant in Indonesia to implement Selective Catalytic Reduction emissions control system.

Despite facing several new regulations for the power industry, the project has successfully set several bankable precedents through the implementation of innovative security structures and unique risk-sharing solutions, which has since been replicated in subsequent projects.

Jawa 9 & 10 received strong support from various export credit agencies and multinational banks, whilst also attracting significant participation for the first time from the top Indonesian state-owned banks in long-term USD non-recourse project financing.

Through the successful and highly competitive international engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) tender process, the project was able to achieve the lowest per MW cost for true OECD-origin country USC class coal-fired EPC in the region.

The project gives the Indonesian government the flexibility to retire older, less efficient, and pollutive plants as green and renewable capacities are being gradually built and added to the system, with it being a large-scale efficient and environmentally responsible base load option.

Jawa 9 & 10 will also allow the government to pragmatically and responsibly transition to greener options in its power portfolio, and be the backbone leading Indonesia’s drive for electrification and demand growth.

“[Jawa 9 & 10’s] focus has always been to deliver reliable and efficient baseload power in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. This trailblazing project has been setting benchmarks throughout its development and its innovations has since become the reference for other projects,” Indo Raya Tenaga said.

The Asian Power Awards 2021, one of the most prestigious awards for the power industry, recognises groundbreaking projects and trailblazing initiatives in the power sector in Asia.
