China Resources Power Holdings Company Limited emerges victorious at Asian Power Awards 2024

The power generation company’s accolades were in recognition of its commitment to environmental stewardship as well as its leadership in the energy sector.

China Resources Power Holdings Company Limited (CR Power) bagged two wins at the Asian  Power Awards 2024, earning the awards in the Power Utility of the Year - China and Information Technology Project of the Year - China categories.

State-owned enterprise CR Power, founded in 2001 and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2003, engages in various energy sectors. These include wind, photovoltaic, thermal, hydroelectric, distributed energy, power sales, and integrated energy services across  China.

Financial performance and growth

As of 30 June 2024, CR Power reported assets totalling HK$346.8bn and an operational generation capacity of 80,314 MW, with 62,758 MW attributable to the company. Remarkably,  renewable energy projects accounted for 39.3% of this capacity. The company operates in all  31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Having a strong emphasis on social responsibility and sustainable development, CR Power has addressed the fluctuating fuel prices and electricity supply-demand imbalance by ensuring a stable supply of electricity and heat, especially during shortages. It actively supports the national rural revitalisation strategy, exploring initiatives like "renewable energy+," "purchase to support," and "infrastructure assistance" to aid rural development. CR Power also invested over RMB49.9m in public welfare in 2023, focussing on vulnerable groups, education, and environmental protection. The company dedicated RMB36.4m as well to rural revitalisation efforts, which benefitted over 21,000 individuals.

Moreover, CR Power champions innovation by implementing Building-Integrated  Photovoltaics (BIPV) technology in its C’estbon project to enhance scale and profitability. It has also introduced energy storage management systems in megawatt-hour projects, and is a pioneer in Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technology in China, supporting the nation's low-carbon transition.

Smart energy cloud platform

Recognising the growth of the integrated energy service industry amidst the energy revolution and dual carbon goals, CR Power has prioritised integrated energy services as one of the key strategic focusses. Amongst these are distributed power supply, recharging and battery swapping, energy storage, and low-carbon energy-saving services.

This project faced challenges such as being spread across multiple locations, being small in scale, and requiring many installations that can lead to long development times, low efficiency, and high operational costs. Aside from these, there is the need of many customers to manage energy consumption effectively using smart and digital solutions, in order to ensure efficient production and support green development.

To address these challenges, CR Power has developed the China Resources Smart Energy  Cloud Platform. This platform leverages technologies like Cloud, Big Data, the Internet of  Things, AI, Mobile Internet, and Edge Computing. Built on a microservices architecture, it integrates various energy management and optimisation capabilities. The platform includes tools for monitoring and maintaining distributed solar power systems, optimising cooling stations, managing energy storage, and handling charging operations.

By centralising energy monitoring, carbon asset management and energy optimisation, the platform helps industrial and commercial enterprises improve their energy efficiency and support smart manufacturing. In 2023, the platform was updated to enhance monitoring for solar power systems and incorporate smart algorithms. This integration improves the operation and maintenance of dispersed solar projects and helps set a standard for digital zero-carbon parks.

The China Resources Smart Energy Cloud Platform supports over 1,100 industrial and commercial clients, including over 100 solar power stations, energy storage projects, zero-carbon industry parks, and cooling/heating networks. Additionally, several demonstration projects have been developed, positioning the platform as a leading example of technological innovation in the industry.

The prestigious Asian Power Awards honours exceptional companies that have taken game-changing steps to address the effects of the climate crisis and meet the growing demand for energy. It also provides a platform for industry players to network, share their experiences, and learn from one another.
