IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Company Limited wins at Asian Power Awards 2025

The company earned recognition for its energy optimisation measures and sustainability initiatives in India’s power sector.

IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Company Limited won Environmental Upgrade of the Year - India and Power Utility of the Year - India in theAsian Power Awards 2025. The twin achievements underscore the company’s operational efficiency and long-term commitment to sustainable energy practices.

For its utility operations, IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Company Limited maintained a plant heat rate of 2,404 Kcal/kWh at a 66% plant load factor, supported by real-time monitoring systems and heat loss detection measures. The company also deployed a variable frequency drive in its electro-chlorination plant cooling pump, resulting in significant energy savings and an annual reduction of over 80 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The company invested in advanced pollution control technologies to ensure compliance and protect local communities. It remains the only thermal power plant in Tamil Nadu operating a flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system designed for full boiler capacity. Established with a capital investment of Rs.750 crore, the FGD achieved an average of 108.4 mg/Nm3 sulphur dioxide emissions against the 200 mg/Nm3 standard. Electrostatic precipitators further reduced particulate matter to 4.54 mg/Nm3, well below the 50 mg/Nm3 threshold.

In parallel, IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Company Limited carried out large-scale ecological restoration efforts under its environmental upgrade programme. More than 365,000 trees were planted across 301 acres, with mangrove plantations maintained across 42 acres in partnership with Annamalai University. The programme also restores degraded mangrove forests in Pichavaram along the Bay of Bengal, where 33,000 trees are sustained in collaboration with local forest authorities.

Continuous monitoring of the marine ecosystem demonstrated improvements in coastal biodiversity, with the Tamil Nadu Department of Fisheries recording an increase in fish catchment linked to the company’s conservation measures. On-site infrastructure further reinforced environmental performance, including wind barriers to reduce coal dust dispersion, covered conveyor galleries, and acoustic enclosures to mitigate noise from heavy machinery.

The Asian Power Awards celebrates the innovative and groundbreaking projects and initiatives in the power sector. Dubbed as the “Oscars” of the power industry, the awards programme honours companies that have taken game-changing steps to meet the growing energy demand.
