McDermott wins at Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2025 for safety initiative

The company’s operational excellence programme embeds safety as a driver of performance.

McDermott has been recognised with the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year - Malaysia award at the prestigious Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2025, celebrating its commitment to embedding safety as a core driver of operational performance.

The award highlights McDermott’s Subsea and Floating Facilities holistic approach to health, safety, and environment (HSE) across its operations. The initiative integrates people, processes, equipment, and tools to move beyond compliance, focusing instead on proactive risk identification, mitigation, and engagement at all levels.

Key elements of the initiative include: life-saving rules, targeted safety engagements, peer-led safety reviews, leadership conversations, and risk assessment tools.

McDermott’s life-saving rules provide clear, actionable standards for identifying and managing risks, ensuring safety remains a top priority across offices, project sites, and offshore environments. Site teams participate in awareness campaigns, risk-focused interventions, and recognition programmes that reinforce safe behaviours and accountability. Volunteers from various disciplines also act as “Safety Wardens,” offering real-time feedback on equipment and procedures. This peer-to-peer model helps surface practical issues that traditional audits may miss.

Meanwhile, structured dialogues between leaders and frontline teams foster transparency, encourage ownership, and help identify barriers to safe work. Workers are also encouraged to pause before tasks to reassess their surroundings, reinforcing safety as a continuous habit rather than a one-time checklist.

Together, these efforts have strengthened hazard control, improved reliability, and cultivated a culture of safety, learning, and ownership throughout Subsea and Floating Facilities operations.

The Asian Oil and Gas Awards recognises the most outstanding players in Asia's oil and gas sector. The awards programme is for companies that have risen above various challenges and remained steadfast despite a very challenging environment.
