India and Japan to resume stalled nuclear talks
Japan intends to provide nuclear energy for India.
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Japan has judged it sensible to negotiate an accord with India on nuclear cooperation.
Bilateral negotiations regarding nuclear power between India and Japan started in 2010 but talks have been suspended since the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been pitching Japan’s nuclear technology to other nations, and is expected to promote the export of Japanese nuclear power plants to India when he meets India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on May 29 in Tokyo.
In the wake of widespread concern about the safety of Japan’s nuclear power, Abe has been quick to say that Japan has learned its lessons and ensures the safety of all exported nuclear technology.
The Indian government has expressed strong hope for a nuclear agreement with Japan even after the nuclear accident.
“As a country having experienced a disaster, Japan is responsible for contributing to the improved safety of atomic energy by sharing knowledge and lessons with the world,” Suga said.
