Bangladesh seeks Japanese investment in power sector

Problems of electricity contributes to the impediments to Japanese investment in Bangladesh.

This was shared by Japanese deputy prime minister, Katsuya Okada.

Japanese investment in Bangladesh is ‘increasing’, but the problems of electricity, gas and administrative procedures are creating ‘impediments’ to the investment, he said during a meeting with prime minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.

Describing Bangladesh as a ‘country of potential’, he said the country would go a long way if the potential could be utilised properly.

In response, Hasina said the government had been working for resolving the problems.

She sought Japanese investment in Bangladesh’s power sector.

The two sides also discussed the progress of the 19-point declaration issued during prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Japan in 2010.

Japanese ambassador in Dhaka Shiro Sadoshima, foreign secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes and other high officials were present at the meetings.

This is Okada’s first visit to Bangladesh.
