China commences work on Xudabao nuclear unit 3

CNNC starts construction work of its $17b-worth project.

Te Xudabao 3 nuclear project in Huludao, Liaoning Province, which is run by the Chinese state-run nuclear group China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), officially started construction. This nuclear project is to include six 1,000-megawatt units.

On the other hand, Xudabao 4 nuclear unit located in the same province, will start its construction by 2022. In Construction Global news, Sam Steer reports that the VVER-1200 reactors, flagships of the Atomstroyexport, a subsidiary of Russian nuclear power company Rosatom, were commissioned for the Xudabao station following the agreement between China and Russia in June 2018.

Enerdata reported that in 2019, CNNC and Rosatom signed an agreement on the construction of two VVER-1200 nuclear reactors (units 1 and 2), and the general contract for two additional VVER-1200 reactors (units 3 and 4) which is set to be commissioned by 2027-2028.

In addition, according to World Nuclear News, Rosatom will design the nuclear island, as well as supply steam generators, cooling pumps, piping, and pressurisers. It will also oversee the construction and commissioning of each reactor. The design and construction of the remainder of the plant will be supervised by China.

This Xudabao nuclear project is owned by Liaoning Nuclear Power Company, a joint venture of CNNC (70%), Datang International (20%), and State Development and Investment Corporation (10%).
