Vietnamese consortium wins supplier agreement for two wind offshore substations in Taiwan

Hai Long 2 and Hai Long 3 substations have a total capacity of over 1GW.

Vietnamese consortium, led by Semco Maritime and PTSC Mechanical & Construction Co. Ltd., won the preferred supplier agreement for the construction of two offshore substations for the Hai Long wind projects in Taiwan.

Hai Long 2 and Hai Long 3 substations, which are located off the Taiwanese coast, will deliver more than one gigawatt of green wind energy once commissioned in 2025 to 2026, according to a statement by Hai Long Offshore Wind Project and Semco Maritime.

The agreement—the largest offshore substation contract awarded for a Taiwanese project and the first in Vietnam—includes design, engineering, procurement construction, and commissioning of two offshore substations.

Meanwhile, substation jackets will be manufactured at the yard facilities of PTSC M&C’s yard facilities in Vũng Tàu, a port city in South Vietnam.

“The signature of this Preferred Supplier Agreement is another key milestone for Hai Long on the way to Financial Close and into construction and we’re delighted with it and very much looking forward to the journey that we now begin with Semco Maritime and PTSC M&C,” said Hai Long Project Director Felipe Montero.

The consortium, along with ISC Consulting Engineers as the primary sub-contractor, will start the project in the fourth quarter of 2021, with offshore installation planned in 2024 and commissioning in 2026.

“The order provides us with a solid footprint in the exciting Asian offshore wind market, which is developing at a fast pace,” Frank Holm, vice president of Renewables of Semco Maritime said.

The Hai Long wind farm is located in the Taiwan Strait around 50 kilometres off the coast.
