Adani, IHI, Kowa signs MoU for sustainable power generation

They plan to study ammonia co-firing to decarbonise coal-fired plants.

India-based Adani Power Limited (APL) partnered with Japanese firms IHI Corporation and Kowa Company, Ltd. to study the feasibility of the use of co-firing ammonia to decarbonise coal fired assets of Adani Power Limited.

In a statement, Adani said the three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to study the feasibility of a modification to achieve 20% liquid ammonia co-firing ratio and increasing it up to 100% mono-firing at the Adani Power Mundral Coal Fired Power Plant.

Co-firing is the “combustion of two different fuels aimed at increasing efficiency,” it said.

“APL aims to lead India’s initiatives in achieving greenhouse gas reduction targets by evaluating the possibility of potential implementation of ammonia as a fuel in thermal power generation that will utilise Green Hydrogen-derived ammonia in the existing thermal power plant,” Adani said.

It noted that Kowa supported the company by conducting a global survey of hydrogen and ammonia-related technologies that are being used for power generation, whilst IHI demonstrated its ammonia co-firing technology at a large-scale commercial coal plant in Japan.

The parties also said that aside from decarbonising the coal-fired assets of Adani, they aim to “potentially implement the technology in other coal-fired units within India.”

They also plan to conduct research and development, demonstration, and commercial implementation alongside that in Japan to achieve early implementation of fuel ammonia supply chain globally.

Adani said this partnership is also in line with the India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership.
