Masdar to co-develop 10GW onshore wind project in Egypt

An MoU was signed with Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities.

United Arab Emirates-based Masdar signed a memorandum of understanding with its Infinity Power joint venture with Infinity and Hassan Allam Utilities for the development of a 10-gigawatt (GW) onshore wind project in Egypt.

In a statement, Masdar said the memo for one of the largest wind farms globally was signed on the sidelines of the 2022 United Nations Climate Conference held in Egypt.

The wind farm will generate 47,790 GW-hours of energy annually when completed and avoid 23.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions which is equivalent to around 9% of Egypt’s total emissions.

The project will also help the country save around $5b in annual natural gas costs and create up to 100,000 jobs as the construction phase will open around 30,000 direct employment, and around 70,000 indirect employment.

According to Masdar, the project is part of Egypt’s Green Corridor initiative or the grid dedicated to renewables.

It will also contribute to achieving Egypt’s target to have renewables account for 42% of its energy mix by 2035.
