PETRONAS wins big at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2022

The company is transforming their way of working by harnessing the power of data.

Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Berhad, better known as PETRONAS, has won three major awards at the recent Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2022 for its development of analytics data platform Enterprise Data Hub (EDH) and a centralised Enterprise Knowledge Intelligence Hub (EKIH).

“We are constantly looking at ways that we can fully harness the wealth of data that we have as an organisation. With these two solutions in place, our people can now focus on solving business pain points, optimising operations and creating value using data analytics,” said PETRONAS Chief Digital Officer Aadrin Azly.

The EDH, which won the Data Initiative of the Year - Malaysia title, supports data liberalisation across over 250 PETRONAS companies worldwide.

This capability allows PETRONAS to use analytics with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) throughout the enterprise value chain to support innovation and amplify bottom-line performance.

The platform propagates data and advanced analytics as a service and pulls data from over 200 data sources from the integrated value chain. It also provides an enterprise-wide data lake store, curation and processing platform as a comprehensive solution to address the varied digital and analytics requirements.

EDH ensures data integrity and accessibility group-wide by enforcing data standardisation, quality, entitlement, security and decoupling of data from the application whilst guided by legal and regulatory requirements.

With a multi-tenancy concept, the platform also enables full data autonomy to business units with enterprise data guardrails, enabling them to design data models based on their operational requirements. It empowers them to crowdsource and accelerate data enablement within EDH.

Meanwhile, the EKIH was created to help PETRONAS employees look for content relevant to their queries based on their respective domains. For an enterprise search engine to be beneficial, it has to be easily accessible.

EKIH clinched both the Digital Transformation Initiative of the Year - Malaysia and the Innovative Technology Initiative of the Year - Malaysia awards.

The intelligence hub leverages on cognitive search technology to deliver an enterprise search tool with the ultimate goal of improving users' search queries by deriving meaningful contextual results from multiple databases and more importantly, enterprise-wide good practices and lessons learnt.

The AI/ML solution is driven by Knowledge Graph (KG) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) that bring intelligence by providing deeper context and powerful insights to the organisation’s diverse and disparate data sources. EKIH is built upon PETRONAS asset ontology and taxonomy, enabling more accurate search results via its integration with KG.

Piloted for engineering content in May 2022, EKIH has benefited around 1,000 users, 70% of which are active users. With higher accuracy compared to a keyword search, it has garnered more than 8,000 searches. The EKIH team continuously engages users to gather feedback and to understand how the product has impacted their productivity. Users have reported up to 60% reduction in time spent searching for information – from days/hours to within minutes/seconds. With this success, EKIH will be expanded to other knowledge domains in PETRONAS.
