AGL reaches FID for 500 MW Tomago Battery Project

The project will commence operations in 2027.

AGL has reached a final investment decision on the 500 megawatt (MW) Tomago Battery Project in the Hunter Region, New South Wales.

The company also announced its continued partnership with Fluence on this project, “leveraging their expertise from our 500 MW Liddell Battery, which is on track to commence operations in early 2026.”

The Tomago Battery is a four-hour duration (2,000 megawatt-hour (MWh)) capacity grid-scale battery located between the Pacific Hwy and Old Punt Rd in Tomago Industrial Estate.

It aims to improve the reliability of the grid by storing power for use when energy demand exceeds generation.

Construction work is targeted to start in October 2025, with the commencement of operations targeted for September 2027. The project will provide up to 200 jobs during the construction phase and up to six full-time jobs during operation.
