Saudi Aramco - OSPAS recognised at Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2025
The company’s automated ships pre-arrival check and flaring prevention drive efficiency gains and emission reductions.
Saudi Aramco - OSPAS won Digital Transformation Initiative of the Year - Saudi Arabia and Net Zero Initiative of the Year - Saudi Arabia in the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2025.
The recognition highlights two major projects: the Ships Efficiency & Automation Intelligence (SEA.I) robot and the initiative to mitigate gas flaring at oil producing facilities. Both projects show how operational efficiency and environmental performance can advance together through digital solutions and data-driven planning.
SEA.I automated the pre-arrival process for hydrocarbon vessels at Aramco Terminals. Previously carried out manually four days before arrival, the checks now begin ten days in advance, with ship details validated three times a day. The system also automates hold applications, communications with relevant teams, berth assignments, and event logging for demurrage evaluation.
This automation reduced average vessel waiting time at ports by nearly a quarter, leading to an annual reduction of more than 750 kilotons of carbon dioxide emissions from vessels waiting at anchorages. It also cut manhours by about one-quarter, allowing staff to focus on other tasks. An indirect outcome was a 30% drop in customer demurrage claims.
Alongside digitalisation, Saudi Aramco - OSPAS developed a gas flaring mitigation strategy. In 2024, the team prevented more than 6 billion standard cubic feet equivalent of gas flaring, avoiding over 430,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The effort relied on a newly developed flaring minimisation dashboard, demand forecasting, and real-time monitoring to predict disruptions and adjust production from unaffected locations.
This approach enabled essential pipeline revalidations and urgent repairs without requiring gas flaring or disrupting supply commitments. It also supported Saudi Arabia’s national goals of cutting emissions and moving towards net zero by 2060.
