CLP Power Hong Kong Limited energises Hong Kong’s new development with sustainable infrastructure and smart technology
Kam Tin South Substation showcases CLP Power’s commitment to building a resilient energy future.
CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) has been recognised at the Asian Power Awards 2025, winning the Transmission & Distribution Project of the Year - Bronze for its Kam Tin South Substation (KNS S/S), a strategic facility designed to power the growing energy needs of Hong Kong’s Kam Tin South New Development Area.
As Hong Kong continues its transformation into a smart and low-carbon city, CLP Power plays a pivotal role in supporting the city’s sustainable growth and development.
The Kam Tin South Substation is a key infrastructure project supporting the area’s expanding residential, commercial and transportation developments. Operating as a primary 132kV transmission facility, it delivers reliable electricity to new housing estates, shopping centres, public amenities, and an evolving transport network.

The substation’s design reflects a forward-thinking approach to space efficiency and operational safety. With a compact layout, the single-storey building maximises space efficiency, arranges equipment strategically for safe operations, and includes maintenance-friendly features such as lifting appliances and haulage lugs. Its exterior incorporates bold grey and green stripes, blending seamlessly with the surrounding hilly landscape and future municipal developments, reflecting CLP Power’s sensitivity to environmental integration.
Sustainability was embedded throughout the project lifecycle. During construction, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was used in place of diesel generators to power heavy machinery such as tower cranes and welding equipment. This significantly reduced noise levels, eliminated emissions, and improved safety whilst enhancing cost efficiencies. The substation also features dual-flush toilets to conserve water and electric vehicle chargers to promote low-carbon transport in the community.
Technology innovation was central to the project’s success. The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) across the planning, design, and construction stages enhanced coordination and communication with contractors, reduced potential design conflicts, and ensured construction efficiency. By leveraging a common data environment, BIM also supported accurate cost estimation and streamlined tendering processes.
CLP Power’s Kam Tin South Substation illustrates the use of smart infrastructure in urban development. As Hong Kong continues to grow, CLP Power is dedicated to developing a resilient and future-ready power network that empowers communities and supports the city’s ongoing development.
