Marafiq, the power and water utility company for Jubail and Yanbu, wins at Asian Power Awards 2025

Marafiq’s sustainability roadmap underscores its leadership in emissions reduction, circular economy, and governance integration.

Marafiq won the ESG Integration Excellence of the Year - BRONZE and ESG  Programme of the Year - Saudi Arabia in the Asian Power Awards 2025 for its comprehensive approach to embedding sustainability across its power and water operations.

Both recognitions highlight Marafiq’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, and alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s net-zero goal for 2060. Marafiq’s approach towards sustainability and its ESG framework sets clear goals for decarbonisation, resource efficiency, and governance transparency.

Marafiq’s strategic roadmap targets a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, with a long-term vision to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Through its liquid fuel displacement programme, Marafiq is transitioning from liquid fuels to cleaner natural gas, significantly lowering CO₂ and toxic air pollutants across its operations. It also implemented  U.S. EPA-approved Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems and adopted advanced emission-control technologies such as selective catalytic reduction, seawater-based flue gas desulphurisation, low-NOx burners, and electrostatic precipitators.

Between 2022 and 2024, Marafiq achieved an 8.5% cumulative reduction in total GHG emissions and improved its emissions intensity ratio from 0.725 to 0.719 KgCO₂e/kWh despite increased generation demand. These measures enhanced air quality in Jubail and Yanbu, with nitrogen oxide levels significantly reduced.

Circular economy initiatives further strengthen Marafiq’s ESG strategy. By recovering base metals and plastics from waste streams, Marafiq avoided over 673 tonnes of CO₂ emissions from 2022 to 2024 and an additional 120 tonnes in the first quarter of 2025. Its 100% recycling of waste oil and reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation also demonstrates its commitment to resource efficiency and biodiversity protection.

Social and governance elements are equally embedded in Marafiq’s operations. The company upholds diversity, employee well-being, and safety, recording over 18.6 million safe man-hours without incidents, and ensures compliance with international standards through ISO certifications in quality, environment,  energy, and occupational health and safety. Its stakeholder engagement and materiality assessments guide  ESG priorities, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and fostering investor confidence through transparent reporting and sustainable finance practices.

Marafiq’s commitment to sustainable and efficient utility services plays a crucial role in the environmental stewardship and industrial growth of Yanbu and Jubail Industrial Cities.
