SG deepens cooperation with US through new nuclear energy deals
This will help in studying the possible deployment of nuclear power.
Singapore has entered into two cooperation agreements with organisations from the US, fuelling the development of nuclear energy in the city-state.
According to the Energy Market Authority (EMA), “the nuclear cooperation agreements aim to systematically build up capabilities in studying the feasibility of deploying nuclear energy for power generation in Singapore.”
One of the agreements signed was the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between EMA and Battelle Memorial Institute regarding Cooperation in Nuclear Energy Capability Building, Research and Development.
“This MoU provides a framework for cooperation between both parties to study various aspects of nuclear energy and advanced reactor technologies, leveraging Battelle’s networks and expertise,” EMA said.
There is also a letter of intent for Idaho National Laboratory to collaborate with EMA on nuclear energy. Both parties agreed to work towards establishing a formal Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to collaborate on studies, technical assessment, and capability building in advanced nuclear energy technologies.
“These cooperation agreements build on the Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy signed in July 2024, and the Memorandum of Understanding Concerning Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation signed in January 2025 by Singapore and the US,” EMA said.
