Record 2025 installs push India’s RE capacity to 258GW
It added record 37.9 GW solar and 6.3 GW wind in 2025.
India made history in 2025, adding a record 37.9 gigawatts (GW) of solar and 6.3GW of wind capacity, according to JMK Research. It’s the fastest annual growth ever in the country’s clean energy sector.
Solar led the charge, contributing more than half of India’s total renewable capacity. Utility-scale projects added 28.6GW, whilst rooftop solar jumped 7.9GW, up 72% from 2024.
Off-grid and distributed solar added another 1.35GW. The surge was driven by long-pending tenders, policy incentives like ISTS waivers, and rapid domestic manufacturing expansion. By year-end, India’s solar module and cell production capacity surpassed 200GW.
Wind energy also roared back, with 6.3GW added, nearly double the previous year. Open-access projects and states like Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan drove most of the growth.
India’s total renewable energy capacity now stands at approximately 258GW, with solar and wind accounting for nearly three-quarters. The 2025 surge positions India to hit its 2030 target of 500GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, with energy storage and green hydrogen poised to boost future growth.
