PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero) wins three honours at Asian Water Awards 2025

The firm achieved recognition for initiatives addressing critical water access in Bali, reforestation in West Java, and sustainable supply systems in East Java.

PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero) (PT SMI) has earned three prestigious awards at the Asian Water Awards 2025, recognising its impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and blended finance platform in Bali, West Java, and East Java. The company received the awards for Collaborative Water Initiative of the Year - Indonesia, Net Zero Carbon Project of the Year - Indonesia, and Sustainable Water Infrastructure Award - Indonesia.

Restoring clean water systems in Bali

In Bangli Regency, Bali, PT SMI, in collaboration with PT Moya Indonesia, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, and Bangli Regency Government, successfully revitalised Balik Bukit Drinking Water Supply System as part of its CSR programme. The agreement for this strategic initiative was formalised during the World Water Forum 2024, held in Bali.

The agreement for the project was signed during the World Water Forum 2024 held in Bali. The water system, located in the UNESCO-listed Batur Geopark, resumed operations after the rehabilitation of wells, booster pumps, and transmission pipelines.

PT SMI rehabilitated drilled wells in Songan Village with a capacity of 24 to 30 cubic metres per hour (head 33 bar) through well cleaning, pump installation, and pipe replacement. It also rehabilitated Alengkong booster pump by installing a new pump with a capacity of 15 to 30 cubic metres per hour (head 12 bar), which replaced two booster pumps.

With this initiative, around 1,800 families in Songan A and Songan B Villages, which previously had damaged or out-of-service water systems, now have access to clean water.

Driving carbon neutrality through reforestation

In West Java Province, PT SMI implemented its CSR initiative and commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2028 with a large-scale reforestation programme. Conducted in collaboration with the West Java Provincial Government, the programme covers 30 hectares of critical land across Cianjur, Bogor, and Bandung Regencies. More than 35,000 seedlings were planted, including coffee, avocado, clove, and native species. These plants also have economic value that benefits the surrounding community, so the residents actively contribute to maintaining the sustainability of this programme.

Using an agroforestry approach, the initiative contributes to carbon absorption and land rehabilitation, and also uses geotagging technology to monitor tree locations and survival rates. The programme supports Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution and the Forest and Other Land Use (FOLU) targets for 2030, aiming to achieve an emission level of minus 140 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent in that year.

Delivering sustainable water infrastructure in East Java

In Gresik Regency, East Java, PT SMI led the development of the SPAM Gresik Project, utilising its SDG Indonesia One blended finance platform to advance sustainable infrastructure. The project represents a significant investment of IDR 600b (approximately US$40m) and delivers a clean water supply capacity of 1,000 litres per second.

Around 90,000 households benefit from the system, along with industrial users in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE). The project was developed under a Build-Operate-Transfer model and applies multi-stage water treatment methods. It has also drawn interest as a reference model for similar projects, including SPAM Dumai.

These award-winning efforts reflect PT SMI’s deep commitment to inclusive development, environmental stewardship, and resilient infrastructure through its CSR programme and blended finance platform.
