South Korea vows to junk nuclear power

The new president warns of "unimaginable consequences".

South Korea's new president Moon Jae-in has expressed how serious he is in realigning the country's energy sector. He has vowed to end all plans to build new nuclear reactors and make South Korea nuclear-free.

He has previously said that he would increase the use of renewable energy in the country and has ordered the early closing of old coal-fired power plants.

In an event marking the closure of the country's oldest nuclear plant, Kori-1, he added that he would not allow extending the operation of ageing reactors.
