China targets deep integration of AI and energy sector by 2030

Focus includes energy data utilisation and AI model innovation in the energy field.

China has launched a new action plan to strengthen the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the energy sector, aiming to boost clean energy support for AI infrastructure by 2030.

The plan seeks to increase the clean energy supply for AI computing facilities whilst expanding the use of AI across the energy industry.

Issued jointly by the National Energy Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the National Data Administration, the initiative focuses on building a development model that combines AI and energy systems.

Authorities said the plan will help secure reliable energy for computing infrastructure, promote low-carbon development, improve coordination between power systems and computing demand, and expand AI applications in the energy sector.

The plan also aims to expand high-value AI applications within the energy sector, unlock the potential of energy-related data resources, and advance innovation in AI models tailored for energy development and management.
