India’s coal imports for power generation down 8.5% in April-September
Domestic production is catching up with demand.
India’s Ministry of Coal said the country’s coal imports for blending purposes in power generation decreased 8.5% to 9.79 million tonnes (MT) during the April to September 2024 period, reflecting efforts to achieve self-sufficiency.
In a statement, the ministry also reported INR 12,929.44 crore worth of savings as the overall price of imported coal decreased to INR 120,532.21 crore from INR 133,461.65 crore during the April to August 2024-2025 period.
India also logged improved coal production, which grew 5.79% to 453 MT from April-September. This “reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline coal usage and enhance domestic production.”
“The proactive measures taken by the government to increase domestic coal output will ultimately reduce dependence on imports and contribute to the overall sustainability of India's energy landscape,” the ministry said.
