New project boosts India’s power capacity
India has commissioned its first successful public-private partnership in greenfield power generation.
The Maithon Mega Power Project in Dhanbad, Jharkhand has successfully synchronised the second of two 525 MW coal-fired power units to bring the 1050 MW plant fully online. The first 525 MW unit was commissioned in September 2011.
In addition to increasing India’s power generation capacity, the project also maintains the status of Tata Power as India's largest integrated power utility. It is a joint venture between Tata and Damodar Valley Corporation.
Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power, said, the synchronisation of Maithon’s 525 MW second unit is a significant milestone. With this development, Tata Power's gross generation capacity stands at 5297 MW, reaffirming its contribution as India’s largest integrated power company.
The company is also one of the largest renewable players with significant wind and solar power generating capacities.
