Taiwan won’t buy electricity from the mainland

Says this is out of the question and will remain so for a long time.

The Bureau of Energy and Taiwan Power Company said Taiwan has no plan of purchasing mainland Chinese electricity. Lee Chun-lee, head of the Energy Bureau's Electricity Division, said that purchasing electricity from mainland China is out of the question.

Taipower plans to install 161kV cables between Yunlin and Penghu to further develop the electricity systems of Taiwan proper and the outlying Penghu Islands. Residents in these areas, however, have yet to reach a consensus and have demanded that cable routes be altered.

Because of the public’s rising opposition to nuclear power, the government has been forced to rethink its energy policies and has considered buying electricity from mainland China as an option.

Experts said it is technically feasible to run underwater cables between both of the Taiwan Strait, but there are significant and sensitive political issues involved.
