India's Odisha targets 50MW solar generation

The Odisha government's comprehensive solar policy will be in place in two months.

This is meant to help the Indian state to reach its target of generating 50 MW of solar power within one year.

Odisha science and technology secretary D N Gupta noted that private investors were interested to put their money in the sector, with eight private companies having already set up their solar power generation plants having 1 MW capacity each.

As part of its policy, the state government will promote rooftop solar power units, solar heating system and solar water pump system, he indicated.

The state government also targeted generation of 80 MW of solar power within next three years, Gupta said, adding that Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission has asked the Gridco Corporation of Odisha to purchase
certain amount of renewable energy including solar power.

While the state last year generated 8 MW of solar power, 20 MW is being generated from bio-mass, official sources said, adding that the Gridco has signed power purchase agreements with eight developers for a total biomass
generation of 98 MW.
