China leads global offshore wind installations in 2019

The country added more than 2.3GW in 2019.

China remains to be the overall leader in new installations for offshore wind, adding more than 2.3GW capacity in 2019, with the UK and Germany ending in the second and third place, with 1.8GW and 1.1GW respectively, said a report by Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

Within Asia, it is followed by Taiwan at sixth place with 120MW of new installations, and Japan taking the eighth spot with 3MW.

Wind generation in China is now expected to reach approximately 1,000TWh and solar generation to hit over 700TWh by 2028.

The Asia Pacific region accounted for 41% of new installations in the global offshore wind in 2019, with Europe retaining the largest market share with 59% of new installations in the year.

GWEC expects over 50GW of new offshore wind capacity to be installed from 2020-2024 globally, as projects with massive targets for offshore wind are set within emerging markets such as the US, Taiwan, and Japan, as well as Vietnam and South Korea.
