ACWA Power signs deal with Itochu for green ammonia in Egypt

They will offtake around 600,000 tonnes of green ammonia initially.

Saudi-based ACWA Power signed a deal with Japan’s Itochu to co-develop and offtake ammonia from a green hydrogen project in Egypt.

In a statement, ACWA Power said the green hydrogen project will have an initial capacity of 600,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.

“We look forward to working with Itochu on the development of our Egyptian Green Ammonia project. We value their vision and their partnership, and I am confident that together we can make this project a reality,” said ACWA Power CEO Marce Arcelli.

The development came following ACWA Power’s framework deal with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the New and Renewable Energy Authority in December 2023 for the development of the plant’s first phase.

ACWA Power is participating in the Neom Green Hydrogen Project and is developing another facility in Uzbekistan in partnership with the state-owned chemical firm Uzkimyosanoat.
