Amazon to develop 420MW solar projects in India

These involve three projects in Rajasthan.

Amazon will be developing its first utility-scale scale renewable energy projects in India involving three solar farms in Rajasthan with a total capacity of 420 megawatts (MW).

In a statement, Amazon said these projects include a 210MW solar farm to be developed by ReNew Power, which is considered one of the largest solar corporate power purchase agreements by a tech firm in the country and the largest single business-to-business projects being developed by the energy firm.

The other projects are the 100MW farm to be developed by Amp Energy India, and the 110MW to be developed by Brookfield Renewable.

These projects can generate a to generate 1,076 gigawatt-hours  (GWh) of electricity annually and power around 360,000 average-sized households in New Delhi.

Aside from these, Amazon will also be deploying 23 solar rooftop projects in its fulfilment centres in 14 cities in India which would generate 4.09MW of electricity, bringing its rooftop projects to 41 with a total of 19.7MW capacity.

Globally, Amazon is adding 2.7GW of clean energy capacity with its 71 new projects, including its first renewable energy project in South America with a solar farm in Brazil, and its first solar farm in Poland. Once operational, its total renewable portfolio will generate 50,000GWh of electricity which can power 4.6 million US homes annually.

Global clean energy tech market to hit $2t by 2035
This is fuelled by investments as countries aim to enhance energy security. The global clean energy technology market is projected to grow from $700b in 2023 to over $2t by 2035, nearing the scale of the crude oil market, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).This growth is fuelled by significant investments in clean technology manufacturing as countries aim to enhance energy security, maintain economic competitiveness, and cut emissions. Investment is concentrated in regions with established positions in clean energy, particularly China, the European Union, the UK, and increasingly, India.Whilst the US, EU, and India have taken measures to support their clean energy sectors, China is expected to remain the world's manufacturing hub. By 2035, China's clean technology exports are forecasted to exceed $340b—comparable to projected oil export revenues from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa contribute less than 5% of global cleantech production value, yet the IEA suggests that these areas still hold opportunities within the clean energy economy. Developing economies, for instance, could leverage competitive advantages to advance in the value chain beyond resource extraction. The IEA said Southeast Asia could become one of the most cost-effective regions for producing polysilicon and wafers for solar panels over the next decade.
