EDP strikes major 28MWp solar deal in Japan

The project spans 48 hectares and will deliver 33 GWh of electricity annually.

EDP has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a technology company for a 28-MWp solar project in Motoyoshi City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, with commissioning set for early 2028, according to a press release.

The company, through EDP Renewables APAC, will develop the greenfield, ground-mounted solar farm, which will supply electricity to the local grid.

The project will span about 48 hectares and include more than 42,000 panels. It is expected to generate about 33 GWh of electricity each year and avoid about 15,100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, based on Japan’s average grid emissions factor.

The technology company will retain the associated environmental attributes.

EDP said the project will support Japan’s energy security and diversification of domestic power supply.

The company has more than 1.7 GW of renewable capacity in its Asia-Pacific pipeline to 2030, focused on utility-scale solar and battery storage. Japan is a key market in its business plan for 2026 to 2028.

EDP manages a local pipeline of more than 500MWp in Japan. The Motoyoshi project follows the company’s 44 MWp ground-mounted solar project in Fukushima Prefecture. Globally, EDP has signed more than 16 GW of PPAs.
