Future of Lungmen nuclear plant put to a referendum

Referendum proposal faces second reading in Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan.

The government sees a referendum on the fate of the uncompleted Lungmen nuclear power plant in New Taipei City as a manifestation of Taiwan’s deepening democracy.

Legislators previously voted 60-45 earlier to put the issue to second reading. The government said a referendum will allow people to decide the future of the facility through a process of rational debate.

A government spokesperson said the Cabinet is unrelenting in its insistence on ‘no safety, no Lungmen.
