World's largest 24/7 solar-battery facility coming to Abu Dhabi
This will deliver up to 1 gigawatt of baseload power daily.
UAE has launched the world's first large-scale round-the-clock project that will combine solar power and battery storage in Abu Dhabi.
According to developer Masdar, the project will feature a 5.2 gigawatt (GW) solar photovoltaic plant, with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage facility. It will deliver up to 1 GW of baseload power every day generated from renewable energy.
“In collaboration with EWEC and our partners, we will develop a renewable energy facility capable of providing clean energy round the clock. For the first time ever, this will transform renewable energy into a world-leading 1GW of reliable baseload energy every day on an unprecedented scale,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and chairman of Masdar.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said the project will create over 10,000 new jobs.
The solar and battery energy storage facility will ensure stability and efficiency by overcoming the intermittency challenges of renewable energy. The 19 GWh battery storage facility will also enable integration of solar power into the grid.
