Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala yet to reorganize electricity boards

The States of Bihar, Jharkhand and Kerala are yet to reorganize their electricity boards into distinct corporations.

To ensure the financial viability of their respective power sectors, the boards should be oragnized into generation, transmission and distribution companies, etc.

So far, 18 States have re-organized their respective SEB's. These include Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh amongst others.

Other States/Union Territories which have Electricity Departments instead of Electricity Boards include Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Pondicherry, Chandigarh, Daman & Diu etc.

The government of Tripura has corporatized its electricity department, while that of Jammu & Kashmir is out of the purview of the Electricity Act, 2003.

The re-organization of Electricity Boards, despite some short comings, has had an overall positive impact with benefits like reduction in AT&C losses, increased and more focused investments, strengthened power systems, localization and reduction of inefficiencies and more.
