Energy saving awareness being instilled in Bangladeshis

Bangladesh Industries Minister Dilip Barua has urged people to reduce power consumption by using energy saving technology.

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution organised the two-day workshop titled “Barrier removal to the cost effective development and implementation of energy deficiency standards and labeling.”

The project, funded by United Nations Development Programme in association with Global Environment Facility, has been implemented in a total of six countries----Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The minister said the project would help in establishing energy efficient quality and labeling of six products including air conditioners, refrigerators, electric fans, electric motors, ballasts and CFL which will create export opportunity for electric products to other Asian countries side by side will spread the country’s export market.

The manufacturing of energy efficient goods will play a significant role in saving power for which country as well as consumer will be benefited at large scales, Baura said.

Global Environment Facility has approved $7.0 million for the BRESL project to save energy and raise awareness about the use of energy saving products in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, China and Vietnam.

Bangladesh government will fund $2.0 million while the UNDP-GEF will co-finance $1.0 million for the project.
