Indian hydroelectric projects hindered by inhabitant opposition, policy issues

 

A total of 10 hydroelectric project were stalled due to held up hindrance from the local populace and other policy and statutory issues.

 


According to Central Electricity Authority the 10 HEPs under its list has an aggregate capacity of 2,894 MW and are conceived for development under the 50,000 MW hydro electric capacity addition initiative of the Government of India.


Out of the 10, three projects with a total capacity of 634 MW are to be constructed in Himachal Pradesh, while three others, with a combined potential of 1,300 MW, are due to be developed in Karnataka.


Two projects, conceived for the state of Sikkim with a total capacity of 530 MW, are hindered due to agitation from local inhabitants, while NHPC‘s 370 MW Shamnot HEP, in Jammu & Kashmir, and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation‘s 60 MW Gohana Tal HEP in Uttarakhand are held up due to environmental and policy related issues.
