Uljin nuclear reactor shuts down

No radioactive leak has been reported.

This was a consolation after a the Reactor-2 at Uljin Nuclear Power Plant came to a halt due to a problem with its turbine control system.

The reactor, located at the southeastern region of South Korea, automatically stopped after a problem was detected in a system designed to supply steam into turbines. That also forced steam-injecting valves to shut down.

The Uljin generator is a pressurized water reactor with a capacity of 950,000 kilowatts, and it has been producing power since September 1989.

There are six nuclear reactors in Uljin, 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, but the operation of three of them remains suspended due to either technical problems or inspections.
