Global offshore wind growth slows in H1; China remains top market

Total offshore wind capacity addition exceeded 60 GW.

New global offshore wind capacity in the first half of 2023 reached 5.6 gigawatts (GW) lower than the 6.8 GW in the same period last year, with China still the top market in terms of total capacity.

In a report, the World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO) said 15 new offshore wind farms started operations during the period, 10 of which were in Asia and five in Europe.

China installed 2.2 GW of offshore wind, increasing its total capacity to 28.7 GW. The UK added 1.1 GW, whilst Germany installed 257 megawatts (MW).

In the floating offshore wind sector, Norway led with 88 MW installed capacity, followed by China at 7.5 GW, and Spain at 2 MW.

This brings the total offshore wind capacity to 63.2 GW, 45% of which were in China.
