China is developing the world's tiniest nuclear power plant

It can fit in a shipping container and can power 50,000 households.

China filled the global headlines as the South China Morning Post reported that the country, known for its knack for making things, is developing the world's smallest nuclear power plant. The micro reactor is so small it could fit into a shipping container, but it is packed with a whopping 10MW of heat which could provide enough electricity for around 50,000 households. It would measure around 20 feet by 8.5 feet, South China Morning Post reports.

The development is currently being carried out by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Insitute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology, and is being partly funded by the People's Liberation Army.

The "baby" plant could be located on an island in the disputed South China Sea.
