Coal India production up 8% in Q1 FY 2025

Five of seven producing units breached their targets.

State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) reported an 8% increase in its production in the first quarter (Q1) of its fiscal year 2025.

In a statement, the company said coal production during the period reached 189.3 million tonnes, up from 175.5 million tonnes logged a year ago. Latest data was also slightly higher than the 189.2 million tonnes target for Q1.

In June alone, CIL’s output was up 9% to 63 million tonnes.

The company said its seven producing arms achieved positive growth, with five of them breaching their respective targets.

Meanwhile, CIL said its total supplies increased 6% to 198.4 million tonnes in Q1. Supplies to coal-fired plants grew by 4% to 160 million tonnes, whilst off-take to thermal power plants stood at 154 million tonnes in the same period.

Supplies to the non-power sector reached an all-time high of 38.4 million tonnes, which was up 16% in the said period.

CIL’s coal loading grew 10.3% to 367.2 rakes per day, whilst coal inventory at its pitheads stood at 81.5 million tonnes at the end of Q1, providing a sufficient buffer in case of a sudden increase in demand.
