Singapore, IEA partner to enhance regional power grid capabilities

The EMA and IEA will hold a training programme for more than 160 participants.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) has partnered with the International Energy Agency to enhance capabilities in regional power grids.

Between 30 and 31 May, the EMA and IEA will hold a training programme for over 160 participants consisting of policymakers, regulators, utilities, and the industry.

“Regional energy connectivity plays a vital role in facilitating decarbonisation, enhancing energy resilience, and improving access to energy,” Ngiam Shih Chin, Chief Executive of EMA, said.

“By fostering the cross-border trade of clean energy, we can enhance the feasibility of renewable energy projects and accelerate progress towards realising the region’s significant renewables potential.”

The training programme is intended to serve as a platform where stakeholders can share best practices in cross-border electricity trading. It will feature the IEA, as well as the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia Pacific, Keppel Electric and ASEAN Centre for Energy.

“Further integration of the national power systems across Southeast Asia needs to be treated as a key priority,” Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of IEA, said.

“It will allow for more of the region’s rising electricity demand to be met by renewables in a cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable manner.”

Singapore and the IEA will next co-host the Singapore-IEA Ministerial Forum on 24 October 2023 at the 16th Singapore International Energy Week.
