China to lead countries that dominate renewables expansion

It is projected to contribute nearly 45% by 2026, the IEA reported.

China is expected to lead the countries that will dominate the renewables expansion between 2021 and 2026, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.

In its Renewables 2021 report, the IEA projected that ten countries will account for almost 80% of all the renewable capacity growth within the same period.

Following China is the United States, which will account for 12% of the total installed renewable capacity.

Also among the top are India with 7%, Germany with 3%, Japan, Brazil, Spain, France, Korea, and Australia, which has 2% each.

The remaining 23% will be the combined share of other countries.

“Since 1990, worldwide renewable capacity has more than quadrupled, but the top ten growth markets have more or less remained the same,” the report read in part.

“Even though there remains tremendous economic and resource potential in countries outside the ten largest, these markets have seen their share stay static since the early 2000s, a trend expected to continue over the forecast period.”
