Malaysia, Korean and Japanese consortium to build Malaysian power plant

Plant to be operational in October 2017.

TNB Western Energy Bhd has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with a consortium of four companies to develop a 1,000 MW coal-fired power plant at Perak.

TNB said the consortium consisted of Sumitomo Corporation, Daelim Industrial Co Ltd, Sumi-Power Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Daelim Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The EPC contract is for the design, supply, construction and commissioning of one new coal-fired generation facility to be operational by Oct 1, 2017.

The new power plant will utilize the “ultra super critical boiler technology” that is more efficient than current conventional boilers operating in Malaysia. The ultra super-critical boiler technology will also reduce the carbon dioxide emissions.

TWE is a unit of TNB Manjung Five Sdn Bhd, which in turn is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNB, the largest electricity utility in Malaysia.
