Australia’s Marinus Link Stage 1 reaches final investment decision
Construction of the first stage will start in 2026.
Marinus Link Pty Ltd has announced that the Marinus Link Stage 1 has reached a final investment decision.
“The decision confirms that there is a sound financial and economic investment case for proceeding with the construction phase of Marinus Link Stage 1, based on an assessment of forecast costs, revenue, associated benefits, and risks,” the company said.
The project aims to bring more Tasmanian hydroelectricity to the mainland, whilst providing the island state with improved access to the National Electricity Market (NEM).
Stage 1 has a capacity of 750 megawatts, roughly equal to the power supply for 750,000 Australian homes. Construction will commence in 2026, with expected completion in 2030.
Agreement on the FID between the Commonwealth, Victorian and Tasmanian Governments marks the beginning of a series of detailed steps before Marinus Link proceeds to the construction phase.
“The project will not only allow more reliable renewable energy into the NEM but also stimulate economic growth, create thousands of jobs, and provide long-term benefits to communities across Tasmania and Victoria,” the government said.
