China’s Batang hydropower station starts operation for second unit
The facility has a total of three 250,000-kilowatt generating units.
China has commenced operation for the second unit of the Batang hydropower station, according to state-owned news agency Xinhua.
Citing a report in the Science and Technology Daily, the agency said this development came after a 72-hour trial at the hydropower station located on the main stream of the Jinsha River in southwest China.
The Batang hydropower station has three 250,000-kilowatt (kW) power generation units, wit a total installed capacity of 750,000 kW.
Its first power generation unit was put into operation on May 15, whilst the third unit is expected to start running in mid-July.
Once fully operational, Batang hydropower will be able to provide more than 3 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually that can energise 1.75 million households. This is equivalent to saving 1.05 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 3.15 million tonnes per year.
