EnergyAustralia begins development of 50 MW battery project
The Hallett battery project is scheduled to be operational at the beginning of 2026.
EnergyAustralia has initiated the development of a 50 MW grid-scale battery project to be situated adjacent to Hallett Power Station.
Situated in Canowie, north of Adelaide, the project within the Hallett Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) would have an initial storage capacity of 50 MW and discharge capacity of an estimated 200 MWh.
The overall generation is estimated to supply over 81,000 homes and small businesses for four hours.
“Over the longer term, the Hallett battery will allow us to transition our gas-fired power station to be in strategic reserve, decrease our emissions, and support more renewables coming into the system. We’re seeking to develop this battery on land we own alongside our power station, which brings some big benefits for construction and delivery certainty,” Daniel Nugent, Head of Portfolio Development at EnergyAustralia, stated.

From the advancement of the battery project, EnergyAustralia has set its goal for the expansion of its capacity to 150MW and 600MWh.
Currently, the electricity portfolio over South Australia has progressed from 1% renewables to over 70% of energy from wind and solar – the highest in the world for its grid size.
