Ialy Hydropower Expansion Unit 2 goes online
It was 18 days ahead of schedule.
Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has announced that unit two of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion work has been energised and synchronised on 13 December.
Construction at the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project started mid-2021. It has two units and a designed capacity of 360 megawatts, and was assigned by EVN to the Power Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB2) as the investor representative. Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 1 is the consulting unit for the project design in each phase.
EVN said the project has implemented innovative construction solutions. Notably, a key strategy involved the simultaneous rotor assembly for Units 1 and 2, enabling parallel site deployment and a demanding 24/7, 3-shift operation schedule, including weekends and holidays.
This approach was crucial for commencing power generation for Unit 2 immediately following Unit 1's activation, achieving an 18-day lead over the anticipated schedule and significantly reducing the overall project timeline by approximately 3 months.
Upon commissioning, this project will augment Vietnam's power system's capacity, particularly during peak demand periods. This enhancement will optimise system-wide operational efficiency, maximise the utilisation of the water resource, and boost annual power generation by approximately 233 million kilowatt-hours.
This project also contributes to mitigating carbon emissions by reducing the operational intensity and runtime of existing units.
