India eyes over 40 new coal projects in five years

Majority are under Coal India Limited.

Over 40 coal projects are planned to be developed in India in the next five years, according to the Ministry of Coal.

In a statement, the ministry said 36 of the new projects are under the Coal India Limited, seven under the Singareni Collieries Company Limited, and two under the NLC India Limited.

The ministry has allocated a total of 175 coal blocks. Of these, 65 coal blocks have received mine opening permissions of which 54 are presently operational. These coal blocks are located across different states and regions of India.

Data provided by the ministry showed that coal production in fiscal year 2023 to 2024 reached 997.826 million tonnes (MT), up from 893.191 MT a year ago. For 2024 to 2025, authorities have so far recorded nearly 540 MT.
