Neoen to Develop Stage 2 of Australia’s Collie Battery project

The project is expected to start operation in Q4 2025.

Renewable energy producer Neoen will be developing Stage 2 of Collie Battery with a capacity of 341 megawatts (MW)/1,363 MWh.

This came after the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) awarded the company a 300 MW/4-hour capacity services contract following a tender initiated by the Western Australian Coordinator of Energy.

The project, targeted to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, will address the risks the AEMO associates with the retirement of coal power plants, growth of rooftop solar and energy demand in the state.

“Long-duration storage is becoming a clear need for electricity networks in transition, particularly as new constraints emerge,” said Neoen’s Chairman CEO Xavier Barbaro.

This is Neoen’s second four-hour storage contract in Australia.

The project, which consists of 348 Megapack 2 XL units, will be connected to Western Power’s new Palmer Terminal substation in the South-West Interconnected System.

Neoen also won a 197 MW/four-hour contract with AEMO last year for the 219 MW/877 MWh Stage 1 of the Collie Battery project.
