REDC to develop 320 MW seawater pumped storage hydropower project

The project is located in the province of Quezon in the Philippines.

Repower Energy Development Corporation (REDC), a subsidiary of Pure Energy Holdings Corporation, will be developing a 320-megawatt seawater pump storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon.

In a disclosure, REDC said the announcement came after securing a hydropower service contract from the Department of Energy.

“The development of a seawater pumped storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon shall be the first of its kind in the Philippines, thus allowing the company to be a pioneering force in this particular area of clean energy.” Eric Peter Roxas, President and CEO of REDC said.

The development is anchored on the memorandum of agreement with Austria-based Gugler Water Turbines GMBH.

The project will have an elevation of around 300 metres above sea level, whilst the lower reservoir will use the coastline for the seawater intake.

The first pumped-storage facility to use seawater for storing energy is located on the northern coast of Okinawa Island in Japan.
