Tata Power commences production from 2 GW Tamil Nadu solar cell line

Additional 2 GW will be added in the following weeks.

TP Solar Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., has started producing solar cells at its two-gigawatt (GW) facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. This facility is the largest solar cell and module plant in India.

In a statement, Tata Power said the plant is expected to ramp up production with the remaining two gigawatt capacity to be added over the next four to six weeks, reaching peak production within the next few months.

“The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency,” said Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD, Tata Power.

The module production line at the Tirunelveli plant was commissioned in October 2023 and has so far produced 1,250 megawatts (MW) of solar modules.

Tata Power has invested nearly $51.21m (INR4,300 crore) towards the establishment of the facility. The solar cells and modules produced at the Tamil Nadu facility will initially cater to the company's ongoing projects prior to tapping other markets.

Aside from the Tirunelveli plant, the company is also operating a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. This has a capacity of 682 megawatts (MW) for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells, and has supplied a total of 3.73 GW of solar modules and 2.26 GW of solar cells.

Tata Power aims to increase its renewable energy portfolio from 41% to 70% by 2030.
